While the number of COVID-19 cases was increasing rapidly across the country, the Indian public found a great distraction in the form of this year’s edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2021). But sadly, after some positive cases in team bubbles, BCCI and IPL Governing Council decided to postpone the league.

While speaking to ANI, BCCI Secretary Jay Shah made it clear that the safety of each and every person involved with the league was the priority.

“The BCCI and the IPL GC have unanimously decided to postpone the 2021 season till further notice. We don't wish to compromise the safety of the players, the people involved, the employees, the groundsmen, the match officials, every single person involved,” he said.

After Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) players Varun Chakravarthy and Sandeep Warrier, Sunrisers Hyderabad wicket-keeper batsman Wriddhiman Saha also tested positive for COVID-19.

After KKR’s positive cases, the team had immediately gone into isolation and thus BCCI had to reschedule the match between the Kolkata-based franchise and Virat Kohli’s Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB).

After Saha’s positive report, tonight’s (4 May) game between SRH and defending champions Mumbai Indians at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi also had to be rescheduled.

MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) also added to BCCI’s troubles as two members of their contingent tested positive. This forced the team to go into strict quarantine which made matters a lot worse.
