Delhi Capitals (DC) batsman Steve Smith admitted that it was not easy to play shots on the Chennai pitch which has seen low scoring matches in IPL 2021. He scored 25-ball 36* runs against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) which included only 3 fours and a six.
After Delhi Capitals' victory in the super over, Smith said he tried to over-hit the ball in his innings which didn't help him, and feels fortunate to win the match by a close margin.
"This wicket's been pretty difficult to score as well. I probably tried to over-hit the ball today rather than just timing it and using the middle of the bat a bit more," Smith told host broadcaster Star Sports.
SRH came close to the target of 160 but they only managed to tie the match. It was Kane Williamson who kept their hope alive till the last ball. But DC didn't let SRH score in the super over and they scored the required 8 runs on the last delivery.
"We have seen on this wicket, guys who have tried to muscle the ball and over-it it haven't done quite as well. Just fortunate to get over the line in end. Kane played a smart innings to get deep and gave them a chance. Fortunately, we are on the right side of it tonight," he added.
Smith is having a good time with the DC franchise. He credited head coach Ricky Ponting for grooming the talented players in the IPL. Last year, he was the captain of Rajasthan Royals before getting released by the franchise ahead of the auction.
"I fit in really well with this crew. They are a good bunch of guys. We are playing some good cricket as well, nice to get over the line and in the nail-biter tonight," said Smith.
"I have worked with Ricky a little bit, he was my captain when I first started playing international cricket, so I know him well. He's done some really good things with this franchise. He is very calm, he brings great energy to the group. It's been a good first couple of weeks."
Delhi Capitals are at number two in the points table with an equal number of (4) wins alongside Royal Challengers Bangalore and Chennai Super Kings.
