Delhi Capitals (DC) off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has taken an indefinite break from the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021, saying that he needs to be with his family and extended family as they fight the deadly second wave of COVID-19 which has hit India.
India has been recording over 3 lakh cases regularly for the last few days and the situation is quite grim across the country.
Ashwin featured in all 5 matches of the Rishabh Pant-led side till now, including their Super Over win over Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on Sunday (April 25) in his hometown, Chennai.
Ashwin wrote on Twitter, "I would be taking a break from this years IPL from tomorrow. My family and extended family are putting up a fight against #COVID19 and I want to support them during these tough times. I expect to return to play if things go in the right direction. Thank you @DelhiCapitals".
Ashwin took only one wicket in the five matches he played, but was often crucial for the side to control the run flow of the opposition, particularly in the powerplay overs.
Delhi Capitals are now second on the points table with four wins from five matches and will head to Ahmedabad on Monday for their next leg of matches in the 14th IPL edition.
