IPL 2021: Sunil Gavaskar points out why Sanju Samson isn't a regular feature in Team India

Sanju Samson failed with the bat once again in the ongoing Indian Premier League 2021.

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar pointed out the reason why Sanju Samson has failed to book a permanent spot in Team India despite having the ability. His words came after Rajasthan Royals (RR) skipper's failure with the bat against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) on Thursday (April 22).

Samson scored 21 runs off 18 deliveries as his team managed to put up a total of 177/9. He had a good opportunity to play another big knock in a pressure situation after RR lost 3 wickets for 18 runs. But he couldn't last long and Washington Sundar got him out in the 8th over.

"First and foremost, the captain has to stand up and deliver. He did it in the first game but that has been the problem with him. That is one of the reasons why he has not been featuring in the Indian team is that he scores runs in one game and then he looks to do it and carry on as if he’s batting in the next game from the same game, and that's how he keeps getting out," he said on Star Sports.

Gavaskar feels Samson needs to play with more responsibility as a captain. Rajasthan have already lost their star player Ben Stokes because of a finger injury.

"So therefore, I think if the captain leads by example, the captain scores runs because he is the one class act in the team… yes there is David Miller, there is Chris Morris who can come in and smash a few but at the top of the order, they need to get it right because what happens is that they have a little problem at No 5, 6 and 7.

"They don't really have any finishers and that is the reason it is so important that the captain at the top of the order gets you lots of runs," Gavaskar pointed out.
