Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) captain David Warner was disappointed with his team’s 6-run loss to Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in their second game in the ongoing IPL 2021 on Wednesday (April 14), saying they should have won the game in Chennai.
Warner was particularly disappointed with the way his batsmen played cross-batted rash shots against the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) spinners and failed to build any partnership at the middle, as Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) succumbed to its second consecutive loss in the ongoing IPL 2021.
Warner told Star Sports during the post-match presentation ceremony: “A very bitter pill to swallow. Obviously, Maxi (Glenn Maxwell) batted well and set the platform, but our bowlers were fantastic to restrict them. We needed two set batsmen at the end but we failed to do that.”

He further said, “We needed to build a partnership and play proper cricket shots. Look, it was just about building a partnership and I was quite disappointed with how we played cross-batted shots against left-arm orthodox and that’s not the way to play here. It hurts.”
After SRH’s narrow 6-run loss to RCB in Chennai, the Australian swashbuckling batsman compared his team’s defeat to Kolkata Knight Riders’ (KKR) 10-run loss against defending champions Mumbai Indians (MI) last night at the same venue on Tuesday (April 13).
The SRH captain further noted, “The last four games here the team batting second at Chepauk should've won all the four games. This is exactly what happened last night. Last night's game between KKR and MI was an example and we played an identical game against RCB.”
Notably, after winning the toss, Warner invited RCB in to bat and his bowlers did a brilliant job by restricting the opposition to 149/8 in 20 overs with Jason Holder and Rashid Khan were their top performers, picking three and two wickets respectively on Wednesday.
But chasing the total, the SRH lost their first opener Wriddhiman Saha for just 1, though, (Warner 54) and Manish Pandey (38) took Hyderabad to the front seat in the IPL 14 clash in Chennai.

But with SRH needing 35 runs in four overs to win, RCB skipper Virat Kohli brought back Shahbaz Ahmed into the attack and he foxed SRH’s batsmen to play cross-batted rash shots and picked three wickets while conceding only six runs in the 17th over, as Hyderabad fell short for just 6 runs in the game.
However, the SRH captain sounded confident of his team’s comeback in the remaining three matches at the MA Chidambaram Stadium having learned their lessons from their last two defeats here.
Warner signed off by saying, “We know how to approach in the upcoming games. We have another three games here and I think the wickets are going to get better here. We need minimum damage in the first six overs and play simple cricket. We need to try to take powerplay wickets and need to have one big partnership in the middle.”
