With Shreyas Iyer ruled out of the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2021) due to a shoulder injury, Rishabh Pant was appointed to lead the side this year, which has been the taking point in the lead up to the tournament.
While everyone is talking about how Pant should go about being a skipper, India’s 1983 World Cup-winning captain Kapil Dev said that the left-hand batsman should continue with his fearless game.
“With captaincy comes responsibility, as well. It will not be easy for Pant. I wanted him to continue his fearless game but if management thinks that he can do better as a captain in near future then why not,” the former India cricketer told ABP News.
Dev then shared his thoughts on Pant’s captaincy by saying, “Yes, there may be 25-26% chances (of Pant winning the IPL for DC), I don't think anything more than that because then you're saying he's better than other teams (captains).
He's a new captain, he needs a lot of experience. But it's a bit difficult to go all the way (in his first attempt as captain).”
The 62-year-old then hoped that the swashbuckling batsman does well as a skipper and comes out with flying colors.
“We should focus on how he handles the team. It's not an easy task with so many senior players. A small section of people can blame him if DC doesn't perform. As the time passes, I hope he comes out with flying colors,” he said.
The Delhi-based franchise will be taking on Chennai Super Kings in their first match of the tournament on 10 April at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
