IPL 2020: "You can't be Dhoni, try being Pant," says Gambhir opines on Pant's batting failures

Gambhir feels it's unfair to compare Rishabh Pant with the former India captain MS Dhoni.

Former India cricketer and politician Gautam Gambhir feels Rishabh Pant needs to improve a lot and that he shouldn't be compared to MS Dhoni. He said there's a huge gap between Pant and Dhoni, and the comparison of such a youngster with a player of Dhoni's stature isn't fair.

Delhi Capitals (DC) are waiting for Pant to come good this season, as he failed to step up with the bat throughout the tournament. In 12 matches, the wicket-keeper batsman has just 285 runs with a mediocre strike-rate of 109.61.

Pant is popular for his big hits, but in IPL 2020, there are only seven sixes in the overall 260 deliveries he faced. Gambhir isn't happy with his performance and doesn't want the media to put a burden on him by hyping him.

“First of all, you have to stop saying that Rishabh Pant is the next MS Dhoni. That is one thing that the media needs to stop doing it. The more media talks about it, the more Rishabh Pant starts thinking on those chances. He can never be MS Dhoni. He has to be Rishabh Pant”, he said.

“MS Dhoni probably had so much of range when he came on to international sixes. With Rishabh Pant, only because he could hit those big sixes and stuff, people started comparing him with someone like MS Dhoni.

"Rishabh Pant has a lot to improve, especially from the keeping point of view and from the batting point of view as well", the member of India's World Cup 2011 winning squad added.
