IPL 2020: “It’s impossible for Dhoni to perform if he plays only IPL”, reckons Kapil Dev

Kapil wants Dhoni to play a lot more domestic cricket to regain his form.

MS Dhoni | IANSChennai Super Kings (CSK) had a forgettable IPL 2020 campaign in UAE. In 14 games this season, they suffered 8 defeats and experienced the league stage exit for the first time in the tournament history.

While CSK enjoyed a three-match winning streak at the end, it came after the team's playoff chances were well and truly gone with only 3 of their 6 victories coming in the first 11 matches.

Apart from the team, skipper MS Dhoni himself was below par with the bat in the IPL 2020, scoring 200 runs from 12 innings at a strike rate of 116.27.

Commenting on Dhoni’s poor showing, legendary India all-rounder Kapil Dev said it is “impossible” for the CSK captain to perform well if he decides on playing in the IPL without getting any match practice, which was the case this year.

Notably, Dhoni was out of competitive cricket for more than a year before featuring in the 13th edition of Indian Premier League.

Kapil wants the 2011 World Cup-winning Indian captain to play a lot more domestic cricket to regain his form.

“If Dhoni decides on playing only IPL every year, then it’s impossible for him to perform. It’s not a good thing to talk about age but at his age, the more he plays, the more his body will be tuned,” Kapil told ‘ABP News’.

“If you don’t play any cricket for ten months a year and suddenly play IPL, you can see what happened. You can always have a season up or down if you have played so much cricket. It has happened to someone like Chris Gayle also,” he added.

“He should go back to first-class cricket (domestic List A and T20) and play there,” he continued.

Meanwhile, Dhoni dismissed rumours of his retirement from the IPL during CSK’s last league match against KXIP, saying: “Definitely not my last game in yellow.”

“If someone has achieved so much, the dip in form does affect and it becomes a challenge. Let’s see how he comes out of it,” Kapil remarked.
