IPL 2020: "Gayle was pinched after benched for long," says Sourav Ganguly

Chris Gayle wasn't part of KXIP playing XI for the first half of the tournament.

BCCI president Sourav Ganguly likes the way Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) batsman Chris Gayle stays calm and cheerful in every situation. However he noticed something when KXIP made Gayle warm the bench in the first half of the tournament, and felt it nipped him.

But Ganguly admired the way Gayle made a comeback after sitting out for a long time. He scored a half-century against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). The Caribbean power hitter looked in his vintage touch against Delhi Capitals and added a quickfire 13-ball 29 runs.

"We all think Chris Gayle keeps laughing and roaming but it pinched him that he has been made to sit out. These are the things to see and learn from. IPL is just too much competition," Sourav Ganguly said while talking to Star Sports.

Gayle would have returned to the side much earlier but he was hospitalized due to food poisoning. But his comeback was in style and after scoring a half-century, Gayle was seen pointing towards ‘The Boss’ sign on his bat.

In a conversation with commentators, Gayle explained the reason for the gesture and said, “All I was saying, put some respect on the name [by pointing to his bat sticker]. That’s all."

Apart from Gayle, Ganguly also praised the other top performers in this season so far. "I think the entire tournament is wow. I can't pick one moment from it. KL Rahul's batting, Shikhar Dhawan's batting, some of the fielding, Jasprit Bumrah's bowling, the way Anrich Nortje and Kagiso Rabada have bowled, the way Mohammad Shami has bowled. Mayank Agarwal's batting in this format."
