IPL 2020: Shane Warne at pain over high-scoring games, suggests ways to restore balance

In wake of the huge totals, frequent boundary-hitting, Warne offered his suggestions over Twitter.

Shane Warne | GettyTaking note of the high-scoring encounters and frequent boundary-hitting during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 so far, Australian spin legend and mentor of Rajasthan Royals (RR), Shane Warne, felt disappointed over the balance of competitiveness between the game's two primary skills.

Warne went on to suggest ways to restore parity and ensure there is "a contest between bat & ball, not just 6’s"

The former RR skipper, who took his team to their only IPL title till date back in the inaugural season in 2008, decried over the number of maximums hit by batsmen in the tournament across venues in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah.

Especially at the death, where no score or target seems far fetched for batsmen these days, reflective of the level of improvement in power-hitting over the years.

This was evident last night (October 1) when Mumbai Indians (MI), who had reached only 62 runs in their first 10 overs, finished with a score of 191/4 against Kings XI Punjab (KXIP). They made 104 of those runs in the last six overs, eventually winning by 48.

"I would improve T/20 cricket by 1 Boundaries as big as poss at each venue & on small grounds keep grass on the outfield long 2 Bowlers a max of 5 overs not four 3 Pitch must = day 4 test match pitch & not be a flat rd As we all want a contest between bat & ball not just 6’s," Warne tweeted.
