Former India wicket-keeper Farokh Engineer has come in support of batting legend Sunil Gavaskar after his on-air comments triggered a huge controversy.

Gavaskar was talking about the viral video of Anushka Sharma and Virat Kohli playing cricket in theiir building compound, which was then twisted by a Twitter user and then was blown out of proportion.

Farokh said people in our country lack sense of humor and Gavaskar's comment was in a humorous tone. He backed the India great and said the words used were also not offensive.

Talking to Pakistan Observer, he said, “We, Indians lack a sense of humor. If Sunil had indeed said so about Anushka Sharma and Virat Kohli, it must have been in a humorous tone and not in the bad or derogatory taste."

Bollywood actress Anushka had openly slammed Gavaskar for the comment during Royal Challengers Bangalore vs Kings XI Punjab match.

“Knowing Sunil Gavaskar well, I am sure he would have said it jokingly. Even in my case, people took it very seriously with the result that Anushka had to come out with her statement.

“I didn’t even know one of the selectors during the World Cup and I asked him who the hell he was because he was wearing the India blazer and he said he was one of the selectors. All they were doing was getting Anushka Sharma cups of tea,” Engineer had said then.

"Anushka is the beautiful wife of India captain Virat Kohli and why would Sunil or me criticize them”, Engineer said.

Earlier, Farokh had got himself in trouble with his comment against Anushka. He had claimed that Anushka was served tea by the selectors during a game in the World Cup, for which the ex-India cricketer apologized later. He said the comment was made in jest and didn't mean to offend anyone.
