Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) had locked horns against Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) on Thursday, 24 September. A horrible day on the field for RCB ended with a slow over-rate fine for their captain Virat Kohli.
Coming into the game, the RCB side was high on confidence having beaten the Sunrisers Hyderabad in their first match of IPL 2020. Skipper Kohli put KXIP in to bat first after winning the toss. What followed was absolute harakiri for RCB.
KXIP skipper KL Rahul went on a rampage and recorded the highest individual score in the IPL by an Indian batsman. His knock of 132* off just 69 balls ensured that his side posted 206 on the board. RCB were never in the chase after a collapse at the top of the innings and went on to lose the game by an embarrassing margin of 97 runs.
IPL 2020: "I have to take the brunt of it," says Kohli for dropping Rahul twice in RCB's heavy loss
In the first innings, RCB exceeded the allotted time to complete their quota of 20 overs and had to pay the price. Since it was the team's first offense, the match officials levied a fine of INR 12 lakhs on skipper Virat Kohli.
According to the IPL laws, if the side breaches the over-rate conduct for the second time, the captain will be fined INR 24 lakhs and the rest of the players will be fined INR 6 lakhs each or 25% of their match fees, whichever is lesser.
On the third breach, the captain has to pay a fine of INR 30 lakhs and gets a ban for one match. Also, the rest of the players will be fined INR 12 lakhs or 50% of their match fees, whichever is lesser.
The Royal Challengers will have to deal with an added problem to their on-field woes for IPL 2020.
