IPL 2020: DC official confirms Ishant Sharma won’t be risked for premature return from back injury

Ishant Sharma suffered a back injury ahead of DC's first match of IPL 2020.

Ishant Sharma with DC coach Ricky Ponting | DC TwitterDelhi Capitals (DC) had suffered a huge setback ahead of their opening match of IPL 2020 against Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) when pace spearhead Ishant Sharma was ruled out of the tie due to a back spasm.

DC managed to win the match thanks to heroics from Marcus Stoinis and an amazing super over from Kagiso Rabada. However, DC team management is in no hurry to bring back Ishant Sharma, unless he recovers fully from the spasm.

"He will ideally need a little time and may miss a game or two. We will not risk Ishant and rush him into the XI so early in the season. The games have only begun and he is a vital cog going into the middle and business end of the tournament," a member of the Delhi Capitals team management told ANI.

Talking about how the injury happened, the member said, "It has nothing to do with returning to training after the pandemic-induced break. He had been training constantly during the break so that is not the case. Also, injuries happen to sportspersons all the time. Even a batsman can suffer spasms while batting at the nets. He was assessed immediately by the physio and necessary measures were taken.”

DC will next take on CSK at the Dubai Cricket Stadium on Friday. And then will face off against Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi on September 29.
