Chennai Super Kings beat Mumbai Indians by 5 wickets in the first match of IPL 2020 at Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi and thus kicked off their campaign on a winning note.
Earlier Chennai Super Kings won the toss and opted to bowl first. Rohit Sharma and Quinton de Kock gave a good start of 46 runs but both the batsmen couldn't convert their starts and got out in back-to-back overs. Suryakumar Yadav and Saurabh Tiwari's useful partnership took the score to over 90 runs and at one stage Mumbai were 121/3 in 14 overs but in the last six over Chennai Super Kings made a good come back and conceded only 41 runs for 6 wickets and restricted Mumbai to 162/9 in 20 overs.
In reply, Chennai Super Kings had a very poor start as Watson got out on Boult's bowling while Pattinson sent back Vijay to the dressing room for just 1 run, and at 6/2 they're in big trouble. Faf du Plessis and Ambati Rayudu rebuilt the innings and brought back their team into the game. Rayudu continued to play his shots and brought up the first fifty of this season. He got out after scoring 71 runs off 48 balls.
In the end, Super Kings needed 40 odd runs in the last 4 overs. Cameos from Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran helped Faf du Plessis to take their team home in the last over. Faf du Plessis also played 58* runs knock.
