IPL 2020: ‘Why didn’t Kohli address this issue before?’ Gambhir on RCB squad lacking balance before

Gambhir feels RCB bowlers will relish bowling on UAE pitches as compared to Chinnaswamy stadium.

Virat Kohli will be hoping to lead RCB to their maiden IPL title this year | IANSRoyal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) are yet to win an IPL title despite having some of the game’s superstars in their ranks over the years.

Under Virat Kohli’s captaincy, the franchise has failed to qualify for the play-offs in the last three seasons. While Kohli had an extraordinary year with the bat, smashing four centuries in IPL 2016 wherein they reached the final, RCB have finished 8th, 6th and 8th in the eight-team table in the subsequent editions.

Ahead of the 13th edition of Indian Premier League, however, cricket pundits believe it could be a breakthrough season for RCB as the conditions in UAE will suit their bowlers. The experts also reckon that RCB have made some good additions and look more of a balanced squad this year.

Speaking on the same line, former India opener Gautam Gambhir said if RCB squad lacked balance before then Kohli should have addressed this issue in previous editions.

“The first thing is that Virat Kohli is the one who has been captaining RCB since 2016. So if the balance was not there earlier, then Virat Kohli should have got more involved,” he said during an interaction on Star Sports.

According to Gambhir, RCB seem to be a more batting-heavy unit this season but he feels their bowlers will relish bowling on UAE pitches as compared to Chinnaswamy stadium.

“I still feel that RCB look a little batting-heavy. But one thing that you will see a little different is that the bowlers will be happy because they will not have to play 7 matches at the Chinnaswamy Stadium. You will be playing in Dubai and Abu Dhabi which probably have bigger grounds, wickets are not as flat as Chinnaswamy. It is always difficult to judge the bowlers from Chinnaswamy’s point of view.

“India’s smallest ground and the flattest wicket is in Chinnaswamy, so bowlers will be happier and you might see a better performance from bowlers like Umesh Yadav and Navdeep Saini,” the two-time IPL winning captain said.

Gambhir expects great things from Chris Morris during the IPL 2020 as he feels that the South African all-rounder can add depth to RCB line-up in both batting and bowling.

“Chris Morris provides balance to the RCB squad, a quality all-rounder although he has not played much cricket. He can be a finisher as a batsman and can also give you 4 overs and bowl at the death.

“They have Washington Sundar and Yuzvendra Chahal as well but it will have to be seen which 4 overseas players RCB picks in their XI,” he signed off.
