Being a champion fielder during his playing days, Mohammad Kaif, the Delhi Capitals (DC) assistant coach, stressed on that as a key factor in determining the winner of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020, starting September 19 in UAE.
In the high-scoring T20 format, Kaif thinks the sides that give themselves an edge over the opponent in terms of run-saving, holding on to their chances and creating pressure will go the distance.

“The best fielding side will have a better chance to win the IPL this year, in the UAE. Fielding is always neglected; if players go out to train they’ll spend hours batting and bowling, but fielding drills, if they do, will not be of the same standard that is required in a match," said Kaif during a virtual press conference on Friday (August 28).
"This is our task as part of coaching staff, to ensure everyone’s up and running. First, a couple of easy sessions, and then some tough sessions later on," he added.
The extended lockdown amid COVID-19 pandemic also prolonged the period of no activity for the players, but Kaif believes it won't take long once they resume training in the coming days to regain that feel and rhythm ahead of on-field action.
"The excitement is there to leave the room, because in the last six days we haven’t left the room," said the former India batsman before Capitals start training from Saturday (August 29) following necessary six-day isolation after arrival in UAE.
“They are excited to go out on to the field, and do what they do the best. Our job as coaches is to ensure that our training sessions run smoothly, and we peak at the right time,” added Kaif.
Kaif rebuffed suggestions that playing behind closed doors will affect the quality of play in the tournament.
"It might feel strange in the first couple of matches. But I don’t think players will compromise on their performances," he said. "When I played Ranji Trophy for so many years, I never let my guard down, I didn’t care about the crowd, you go out and do your best for your state team, your club team."
With Ricky Ponting coming on board as head coach and Shreyas Iyer becoming the captain, Delhi turned a corner last year, reaching the playoffs and even winning the eliminator before losing the second qualifier in what could be deemed a very successful season given the lack of expectations.
While Ponting's influence is much-documented, Kaif touched upon Iyer's captaincy and praised the youngster for swiftly transitioning into a leader.
"I’m very impressed with Shreyas, the way he’s taken his responsibility. Being a young captain last year he did so well, and this year it’s going to be even better because he’s played for India and done well."
"He’ll bring that confidence as a captain. He brings calmness as a captain. I’m looking forward to spending time with him here, and he’ll be an even better captain this year because the team is better this year," he added.
