IPL 2020: #BoycottIPL trends on Twitter as BCCI decides to stick with VIVO as title sponsors

BCCI's decision to retain Chinese sponsors left many fans furious.

BCCI gets INR 440 crore annually from VIVO | TwitterDespite facing pressure to revisit its sponsorship deals following the India-China border clash in June, the BCCI on Sunday (August 2) decided to continue with VIVO as IPL title sponsors.

The growing consensus within the country is to boycott Chinese products after a violent clash in the Galwan Valley in Ladakh on June 15 resulted in the martyrdom of 20 Indian soldiers. Last month, the Indian government had imposed a ban on 59 Chinese apps including TikTok and UC Browser.

In fact, the incident had triggered the BCCI to call for an IPL governing council meeting to review the China-based sponsorship deals in the league.

However, the BCCI's decision to stick with VIVO as title sponsors left many fans furious as they trended #BoycottIPL on Twitter.

After consulting the legal team, the board decided to honour the sponsorship agreement. Notably, the Indian board gets INR 440 crore annually from VIVO for the five-year deal slated to expire in 2022.

"The BCCI has taken this decision after the perusal of the sponsorship agreement and the ownership pattern and upon receiving legal advice in the matter," a BCCI official told IANS.

Meanwhile, the BCCI on Sunday also revealed that it has received green signal from the Indian government to conduct the IPL 2020 in UAE from September 19 to November 10.
