IPL 2020: CSK against tinkering of format, wants "full-fledged" IPL 13, says report

Few of the other franchises are reportedly okay with the idea of a truncated IPL 2020.

IPL 2020 was due to start on March 29 | IANS Chennai Super Kings (CSK), one of the most successful teams in the history of Indian Premier League (IPL), is against any kind of tinkering with the league's 13th edition, currently suspended due to COVID-19 pandemic, a source close to the franchise told TOI

The BCCI president Sourav Ganguly sent a letter to the state associations a couple of days back, intimating them about the board's plans to host IPL 2020 later this year.

CSK, however, feels it is too early to plan anything, given the fact that the country continues to battle the deadly outbreak.

Chennai, whose MA Chidambaram stadium is where the team is based, and its adjoining districts are about to go under another intense lockdown from June 19, a decision taken by the Tamil Nadu government after a huge spike in the reported number of positive cases in the last one week.

"It is a good thing that the BCCI is showing interest to conduct the IPL. But it is too early to plan anything. A lot of clarity is needed on various matters before we start preparing," the source told TOI

There have been reports doing the rounds that few of the franchises will be okay to have a truncated version of the traditional 60-game affair.

But, according to this source, CSK doesn't support the idea and would fall in line with that only if it becomes the last option.

"CSK will be okay with whatever decision the BCCI takes but then they wouldn’t (want) much tinkering of the format. They would want a full-fledged IPL."

Travel arrangements for domestic and international players will be another major headache for the BCCI. The country's borders are still sealed and travelling within the nation also isn't considered a safe bet. There have been speculations that the tournament may be conducted overseas, but for that, firstly the pandemic has to be brought under control.

"If the tournament is held in the country, fans are unlikely to be allowed. So it doesn’t really make a difference then if you are hosting the tournament overseas. The crucial aspect is the travelling arrangements of the foreign players. BCCI needs to sort that out first," the source said.
