IPL 2020 to take place outside India? BCCI chief Sourav Ganguly answers

The 13th edition of Indian Premier League remains suspended “until further notice” due to COVID-19 pandemic.

Sourav Ganguly | AFPThere is a lot of speculation surrounding around the staging of IPL 2020, which remains suspended “until further notice” due to COVID-19 pandemic.

Amid the buzz, BCCI President Sourav Ganguly on Monday (June 1) said India would certainly like to host the 13th edition of Indian Premier League but clarified that nothing about the tournament has been decided so far.

"We can’t say what will happen in the days to come. It is tough to predict. We are looking at all options. We are still not sure when cricket could resume,” Ganguly told Sportskeeda.

As per the media reports, the BCCI is eyeing October-November window for IPL 13 if the T20 World Cup, slated to be held in Australia from October 18 to November 15, gets postponed owing to the deadly outbreak.

Last week, the ICC deferred a decision on the 2020 edition of T20 World Cup till June 10, saying it wants to look at contingency plans for some more time.

There are also reports that India could consider taking the IPL to another country if the Coronavirus situation at home does not improve.

"If at all IPL does happen, we don’t know where it could happen. India would certainly like to host the event, provided the environment is safe. Right now, we are not in a position to say anything. It is too early. We are yet to officially discuss the IPL schedule. But it depends on the safety of the environment. Saving human life and breaking the Coronavirus chain are more important for all of us," Ganguly said.

India has been under a nationwide lockdown since March 25 in the fight against COVID-19 and Ganguly is obeying the guidelines like a truly responsible citizen.

"I have been at home only with my family. I am really bothered with the way people are suffering due to the coronavirus pandemic. I can’t say how many people benefited through my charity foundation. I am trying my best. We all are doing our bit in little ways to come out of this crisis," the BCCI boss stated.
