"Never ever felt it difficult to bowl against Chris Gayle": Harbhajan Singh

Harbhajan Singh revealed strategy used while bowling to the mighty West Indies batsman.

Harbhajan Singh | IANS Even his name may be enough to send a lot of bowlers on the backfoot, but off-spinner Harbhajan Singh says he has never really felt intimidated bowling to the mighty Chris Gayle.

The 'Universe Boss' can be the most dominating batsman on his day, especially in white-ball cricket. Harbhajan, however, says he has enjoyed bowling to the West Indies left-hander, who is among the game's most prolific T20 batsman.

In an interview for ESPNcricinfo's 'The Cricket Monthly', the 39-year-old turbanator, when asked about his strategy over the years to batsmen like Gayle, David Warner, Suresh Raina in the Indian Premier League (IPL), said: "Warner is very good on the back foot - he will cut you. He can switch-hit, he can sweep pretty nicely, he can hit you over cover. He can step out too. Compared to Gayle, Warner is more difficult for me to bowl to."

"Gayle, if someone bowls quick to him, he will keep hitting sixes. If someone bowls slow to him, he’ll have to come out of the crease, which he is not comfortable with. I have never ever felt it difficult to bowl against Gayle," added the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) off-spinner.

Putting Warner above Gayle in terms of the range of strokeplay against his bowling, Harbhajan further said: "I have bowled a lot at him (Gayle) in powerplays. He did not have the sweep. He did not have the shot over mid-on."

"Warner hits everywhere, so it is very important to vary the pace against him. Your body language, your eye contact has to be right. You cannot show him you are scared."

Harbhajan would've been looking forward to bowl to Gayle, who plays for Kings XI Punjab (KXIP), once again in the IPL 2020. But the tournament remains indefinitely postponed at the moment because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
