IPL 2020: Sam Curran eager to play under MS Dhoni's captaincy when normalcy returns

Curran was picked at the auction in December last year by Chennai Super Kings.

Sam Curran | GettyEngland all-rounder Sam Curran is excited to play under MS Dhoni's leadership for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) whenever IPL 2020 is safe to go ahead.

The league's 13th edition remains under suspension because of the COVID-19 pandemic, which means Sam, 21, who was picked at the auction in December by CSK, will have to wait for his big opportunity to be on the same side as the great Dhoni.

"I was very excited to move franchises," said the youngster, who played the last IPL for Kings XI Punjab (IPL). "Chennai is a great franchise with all the big names and I can't wait to play under MS Dhoni.

"Hopefully I will play against Tom (his brother, who plays for KKR), hit him everywhere and then hit his stumps.

"Dhoni exudes calm," added Sam, for whom only Virat Kohli, Dhoni's India captaincy successor, currently matches the level of popularity that the Ranchi-born wicketkeeper batsman has.

"Chennai is quite an older squad so there are quite a few legends who have made it in the game."

"Hopefully they will be looking to give tips to the younger players, so that's something I'm really looking forward to."

The IPL received a massive blow when PM Narendra Modi on Tuesday (April 14) morning decided to extend the lockdown period that the country is in till May 3 in wake of the growing number of COVID-19 positive cases.

With so much money at stake, the option to cancel the event seems out of equation, but the BCCI is likely to further postpone the showpiece tournament in hope that the situation will improve with time and the cash-rich league is played at a later window.

"No-one knows (when the league may be played)," said Sam. "It (the IPL) might happen this year, it might be cancelled, but we have to follow the government guidelines."
