IPL 2019: Harbhajan Singh shares his views on MS Dhoni’s controversial run-out in the final

After suffering a heartbreaking 1-run defeat in the IPL 2019 final against Mumbai Indians, Chennai Super Kings off-spinner Harbhajan Singh has said that MS Dhoni's run-out was one of the key points where the game drifted away from the Men in Yellow.

Terming the loss as a tough pill to swallow, Harbhajan added that the CSK camp wanted the tight run-out to go their way.

"Well, we would have liked MS Dhoni's decision to go in our way. If you see, the angles... from one end it looked out, from one end he looked to have made it,” Harbhajan told India Today.

"It was a tough decision to make. A lot of times it's been said that the decision should be given in batsman's favour. In Dhoni's case, it wasn't given. I think it's one of the key points where the game drifted away from us. Apart from that, I didn't think we built enough partnerships. Watson almost pulled a miracle for us. But it wasn't enough in the end," he added.

During the 13th over of Chennai’s innings, Dhoni was adjudged run-out while stealing an extra run to Malinga’s wayward throw. Unfortunately for the CSK skipper, Ishan Kishan produced a direct hit and ignited the stumps.

Following the appeal from MI players, the on-field umpire quickly went upstairs. This was a very tough decision to make for the third umpire Nigel Llong as one angle showed Dhoni’s bat was on the line, but there was another angle which suggested that the CSK captain might have just made it in the nick of time.

After checking the replays for sometimes, Llong eventually gave it out and MS Dhoni had to walk to the pavilion for just 2 runs.

Later, MI bowlers overpowered CSK opener Shane Watson’s dazzling 59-ball 80 to win the match. Jasprit Bumrah (4-0-14-2) was the star with the ball for Mumbai while Lasith Malinga produced a remarkable last over and saved 9 runs.
