IPL 2019: MS Dhoni got fired up by the way no-ball decision was handled, says Stephen Fleming

Chennai Super Kings won the game against Rajasthan Royals by four wickets on Thursday.

The incident left another question mark over umpiring | IANS

The controversial reaction of skipper MS Dhoni was born purely out of how the situation regarding that no-ball in the final over of last night's IPL 2019 match against Rajasthan Royals was handled by the two on-field umpires, reiterated Chennai Super Kings head coach Stephen Fleming.

"He (Dhoni) was certainly fired up the way the decision was handled and why it was overturned," said Fleming at the post-match press conference on Thursday (April 11). "It was a lack of clarity, obviously from him and he wanted to get it clarified at a key moment."

"It is unusual, he is generally pretty calculative, so it is something that he will be questioned about I am sure for a long time."

With CSK needing 8 runs from 3 balls to win, Ben Stokes delivering the last over bowled a slower-ball turned waist-high full-toss against Mitchell Santner, to which umpire Ulhas Gandhe clearly signalled a no-ball. But his decision was not upheld, and infact revoked by the square-leg umpire Bruce Oxenford.

Santner and Ravindra Jadeja ran two off that ball, and should've had the luxury of a free-hit to follow, but the deserving opportunity of easing up the task was not given to Chennai and that left Dhoni furious. He immediately went upto the umpires and sought clarity over the matter.

At that moment, Dhoni could be seen having an animated discussion with the umpires and yet, Oxenford and Gandhe didn't refer it all to the third umpire and deemed that the ball would not have been above the waist.

The replay later confirmed that it was actually a no-ball, but Chennai were left needing 6 runs off the last two balls, which Santner actually pulled off by smashing away Stokes for a six over long-on off the final delivery.

Dhoni would've been relieved after the win, but his reaction became the talk of the town. He also got fined 50% of his match fee for breaching the Indian Premier League code of conduct.

"My understanding in discussing it with the captain was that we saw a no-ball called and there was confusion," Fleming added. "Our understanding was that the umpire at the bowler's end called a no-ball and then there was confusion around whether there was no-ball or not."

"MS was after some clarity and it didn't seem to be coming, so he took the opportunity to go out and discuss with the umpires. That's how I saw it and that's how I discussed with him afterwards."

"I can't say whether it was right or not. What wasn't right was the confusion around the decision. It is above my pay grade early to go further than that."
