CWC 2019: Williamson makes selection intervention to pick Ish Sodhi in New Zealand's World Cup squad

Leg-spinner Sodhi has played 30 ODIs for New Zealand so far.

New Zealand is due to officially announce its 15-member squad for the upcoming ICC Cricket World Cup tomorrow (April 3) in Christchurch. Chief selector Gavin Larsen and head coach Gary Stead seems to have finalised their touring party for England and Wales this summer.

But there could be a last minute change to the squad already picked by New Zealand Cricket (NZC), as skipper Kane Williamson wants to reportedly have leg-spinner Ish Sodhi picked instead of Todd Astle, who has been pencilled down as the second tweaker along with Mitchell Santner.

Astle did well against Bangladesh recently and has earned selectors' faith, but Williamson believes Sodhi's experience of having played in English conditions with county club Nottinghamshire can be more useful for Blackcaps.

New Zealand is also likely to confirm Tom Blundell as their back-up wicketkeeper for the World Cup behind first-choice gloveman Tom Latham.

Blundell has a modest domestic record in the 50-overs format for Wellington, but he is being considered a better keeper than Tim Seifert. Anyways, Seifert is nursing an injury he suffered during the last round of Plunket Shield in March.

Also, despite getting sacked from the ODI set-up midway through the just-concluded home season, explosive batsman Colin Munro is expected to be New Zealand's third opener at the World Cup that begins on May 30.
