“Nothing’s concrete as yet,” Mitchell Starc unsure of IPL 2027 participation due to jam-packed international calendar

There is a significant uncertainty surrounding the participation of top Australian players in the 2027 edition of Indian Premier League (IPL).

Veteran pacer Mitchell Starc, who is contracted with the Delhi Capitals (DC), has openly addressed the dilemma, saying that there was nothing “concrete" yet regarding whether he would be available for IPL 2027 or opt out to preserve his body.

DC invested Rs 11.75 crore to secure Starc's services during the 2024 mega auction. However, his stint has been disrupted by fitness issues, limiting him to just six appearances during the 2026 season due to shoulder and elbow injuries.

“I’ve had a few discussions. Nothing’s concrete as yet," Starc was quoted as saying by Courier Mail Sport.

Australia face a relentless block of 15 Test matches over seven months leading up to the mid-year window. This includes a high-intensity five-Test tour of India from January to March 2027.

Right after the India tour, Australia will return home to play the historic 150th Anniversary Test against England at the MCG, starting March 11—a date that directly clashes with the tentative start of the IPL season.

The bulk of the IPL window serves as the final rest period before Australia head into a potential World Test Championship final and a marquee away Ashes tour in England.

With the ODI World Cup scheduled for late 2027, Australia's head coach Andrew McDonald has emphasized heavily prioritizing physical reset periods for the senior players.

“I know people will start talking about the IPL and filling that time and what does that look like," McDonald told Cricinfo earlier this year. “I’ve said this before, the IPL is part of our management plan for a lot of our players, and to expose our best players in what I believe is the best competition in terms of T20 cricket has its performance benefits as well. You’ve just got to balance that out."

“I know that people say, country versus franchise and all that, but the important part of this period is that we’re allowing our fast bowlers to reset their body, get everything in order to give themselves the best opportunity across the 20 or 21 games that everyone talks about," he added.

According to McDonald, a final decision on the availability of top Australian multi-format stars won't be clear until closer to the conclusion of the Test tour of India next year.

“You make decisions from Test match to Test match, and the IPL will be a decision once again at the back end of the India (tour)," he said.

IPL franchises have a deadline of November 15 to submit their player retention lists. If DC choose to retain Starc and he later pulls out close to the tournament without an official medical exemption, he could face a strict two-season auction ban under BCCI regulations.
