Next week, the senior management of the Mumbai Indians (MI) IPL franchise will meet in England to analyze their performance in the IPL 2026 season in detail and make important choices for the future.
When the management, including the ownership, analyzes head coach Mahela Jayawardene's post-season report, it is understood that everything would be discussed, including trade talks, coaching, and captaincy.
Notably, under Hardik Pandya’s captaincy, MI finished 9th in the IPL 2026 points table with 8 points from 4 wins in 14 games. This was the second time in three seasons under Hardik that MI failed to qualify for the playoffs.
The Times of India reported that Hardik Pandya is set to move on from the MI franchise and might be traded to some other team in the ongoing trade window. The franchise's stance will be crucial, and it will be intriguing to observe how they set themselves up to maximize the agreement.
It's unlikely that the all-rounder will be the only player discussed in trade talks because franchises are also interested in another former India captain.
MI head coach Mahela Jayawardene’s position is also likely to be discussed, as under him, the five-time champions finished fourth in 2025 and a disappointing ninth in the 2026 edition. It's unclear if he will stay in his current role as the team attempts to start over in the hopes of going back to its heyday.
The Mumbai Indians must also choose a captain for the 2027 season. The course they take next week will be extremely important because they are known to be a team that doesn't believe in temporary solutions. Will they invest in the young Tilak Varma, who was just chosen the India T20I vice-captain, or go with Jasprit Bumrah?
Despite his youth, Tilak's batting returns have been inconsistent. He is still a work in progress as a T20 batsman, according to some, and becoming captain will only make him weaker.
On the other hand, Jasprit Bumrah made his Mumbai Indians captaincy debut in IPL 2026 in a game against the Punjab Kings when both Hardik Pandya and stand-in skipper Suryakumar Yadav were unavailable.
It remains to be seen what decisions MI will make regarding their captaincy future with the options they have available to them.
