The last few days has been tough for Suryakumar Yadav. The man, who led India to a T20 World Cup title earlier this year, was stripped of the T20I captaincy and dropped from the squad entirely due to his extended lean patch with the bat.
While reclaiming his spot in the Indian team is going to be a monumental task, Suryakumar might have lost his place at Mumbai Indians (MI).
Fans noticed on Monday (June 8) morning that Suryakumar had completely cleared his Instagram feed of MI-related picture or mention, fueling intense speculation regarding his future with the franchise.
The only team photo remaining is a standalone image featuring himself alongside MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma. He is also no longer following his official IPL team account or captain Hardik Pandya.
Surya struggled for runs in the IPL 2026 season, scoring 270 runs in 13 innings at a low average of 20.77. He managed to hit only two half-centuries as MI finished the campaign at ninth position on the 10-team points table.
While Shreyas Iyer took over as India’s T20I captain, Tilak Varma was named his deputy. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar cited long-term planning and Iyer's stellar domestic and IPL record for giving him the leadership role.
Despite the setback, Suryakumar Yadav had expressed pride that another Mumbai captain is going to lead India in the shortest format.
"So many things happening, but obviously very, very, very happy for Shreyas as he's getting to lead the T20 Indian team. We played a lot of cricket together in Bombay. Most important thing, what I felt, is that three back-to-back Mumbai captains going on to lead T20s for India. I think it's a very proud moment, and everyone needs to celebrate that," Suryakumar had said on the sidelines of a T20 Mumbai League match on June 6.
