Jofra Archer produced a spectacular all-round performance to help Rajasthan Royals (RR) defeat Mumbai Indians (MI) by 30 runs in their last group-stage clash, securing the final playoff spot in the IPL 2026.
Entering the crease with the Royals struggling at 119/5 in the 13th over, Archer took the attack to the MI bowlers. His explosive 15-ball 32 included three sixes and one four, laying the foundation for a 73-run surge in the last five overs, pushing RR to 205/8 in 20 overs.
With the ball, Archer tore through the top order in the run-chase, removing Rohit Sharma (0) and Naman Dhir (6) with a fiery opening spell. He later returned to claim the crucial wicket of Hardik Pandya, finishing with spectacular figures of 3/17 in his 4 overs.
Speaking after the game, Archer insisted he does not believe this has been his best IPL season. He also joked that his gold chain popping out during celebrations was purely accidental.
“It (gold chain) comes out by mistake. I always try to tuck it back in. Don't think it's my best year, I have bowled a little bit better than this. Every time you take the ball you just try to bowl good areas. Some days you're not going to get rewarded. Happy that we got rewarded on the day we needed to win,” Archer said at the post-match presentation.
Reflecting on his powerplay wickets, Archer mentioned he's trying to ball in right areas and letting the pitch and execution do the work rather than over-complicating things.
“Just trying to get the ball in good areas (talking about the powerplay wickets). If you get hit for a boundary and it's a good ball, then fine. But you try to put the ball in the good areas,” he added.
Archer revealed the coaching staff told him to stop bowling slower balls and return to pace-on deliveries. He noted that this strategy has a higher margin for error and might result in the odd boundary, it remains the safer and more effective option.
“Coach's instructions - after the first two games I was trying to bowl slower balls. And he said, I don't care what you do, I don't want any more pace-off from you. I'm just listening to the coach now. Your margin for error is a bit bigger when you go pace-on. Sometimes you have to deal with a few edges, but more often than not it's the safer option. I wasn't expecting to bat so early,” he remarked.
Jofra Archer admitted he was surprised to be promoted up the batting order after RR suffered a middle-order wobble.
“I wasn't expecting to bat so early. Because of the impact sub I hardly get to bat. When the coach said put the pads on, I was surprised. I'm glad I was able to contribute,” he stated.
Nevertheless, Jofra was happy to step up and classify himself as a genuine all-rounder. “Well I class myself an allrounder,” he said with a smile.
Archer reassured fans of his fitness, having slipped awkwardly while fielding earlier in the match. “I'm very good right now, touchwood,” he concluded.
