IPL 2026: “200-210 was par score,” Shubman Gill rues dropping 'too many catches' after GT’s loss to KKR

Gill bluntly stated his team "didn't deserve to win" after dropping crucial catches.

Shubman Gill | JioHotstarGujarat Titans' (GT) five-match winning streak ended with a 29-run defeat against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the iconic Eden Gardens on Saturday (May 16).

Invited to bat first, KKR posted a mammoth 247/2 in 20 overs, powered by Finn Allen (93 off 35) and Angkrish Raghuvanshi (82* off 44) and Cameron Green (52* off 28).

In reply, the Titans managed 218/4, with skipper Shubman Gill's 49-ball 85 and Jos Buttler (57 off 35), Sai Sudharsan’s (53* off 28) half-centuries going in vain.

Speaking after the game, Gill bluntly stated his team "didn't deserve to win" after dropping crucial catches, noting that while 200-210 was a par score on the pitch.

Notably, GT fielders spilled as many as four catches. While Allen was dropped twice, Raghuvanshi and Green got one reprieve each.

“Looking at the wicket, 200-210 was par score but we dropped too many catches. Pitch was good, the odd one was stopping but I felt we batted well to get to the score we did. No concerns but our fielding could've been a lot better. We set a certain standard and dropping 3 sitters - we didn't deserve to win this one,” Gill said at the post-match presentation.

The captain drew a positive from the loss, stating it is best to make such costly errors now, than in the Qualifiers.

“Looking at it that way, best to have a game like this now than in the Qualifiers,” he remarked.

Shubman Gill said the Titans would now focus on recovering before heading back home for their next fixture.

“I think rest and recover for a couple of days, travel back to Ahmedabad, see how the wicket is and then plan accordingly (for the next game),” he concluded.

While Gujarat Titans are in a highly dominant position with 16 points from 13 matches, their playoff qualification is not mathematically guaranteed just yet. They will face Chennai Super Kings in their last league match on May 21.
