IPL 2026: “You've got 'Q' alphabet already stamped,” Ravi Shastri makes premature gaffe while speaking to GT captain at toss

Shastri confirmed GT's playoff spot before it was a mathematical certainty.

Former India cricketer-turned-commentator Ravi Shastri made a gaffe at the toss for the IPL 2026 clash between Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Gujarat Titans (GT) at Eden Gardens on Saturday (May 16), prematurely declaring that the Shubman Gill-led side had already secured their playoff spot

While the Titans are in a highly dominant position with 16 points from 12 matches, their playoff qualification is not mathematically guaranteed just yet.

During the toss presentation, Shastri asked Gill, “You've got the 'Q' alphabet already stamped against your team, how are you approaching this one?”

It was a harmless slip of the tongue, but gave fans immediate flashbacks to a much bigger commentary mishap by Shastri earlier in the year.

During the T20 World Cup 2026 summit clash in Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium, the veteran broadcaster initially called the final, decisive wicket as the “ninth wicket” before quickly correcting himself to announce India’s massive victory against New Zealand.

Gill, however, didn’t point out Shastri’s mistake and stated that they aim to win their remaining games to secure a top-two finish.

“It's about how the momentum is with us and we have to consistently keep doing the things that we have been doing well. This is not the stage or the time to take any team lightly, but we're hoping to win the next two and be stable in the top two positions,” Gill said at the toss.

GT skipper won the toss and invited KKR to bat first. Riding on half-centuries from Finn Allen (93 off 35), Angkrish Raghuvanshi (82* off 44) and Cameron Green (52* off 28), the hosts racked up a mammoth 247/2 in their allotted 20 overs.
