IPL 2026: WATCH – “We had our plans,” Pat Cummins reflects on SRH’s proactive bowling effort to counter explosive PBKS batters

SRH restricted PBKS to 202/7 after posting 235/4 on the board.

Pat Cummins | Star SportsSunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) defeated Punjab Kings (PBKS) by 33 runs in their IPL 2026 clash at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium on Wednesday (May 6) to move to the top of the points table.

Asked to bat first, SRH posted a massive 235/4, powered by fiery half-centuries from Heinrich Klaasen (69 off 43) and Ishan Kishan (55 off 32). Earlier, Abhishek Sharma (35 off 13) and Travis Head (38 off 19) produced blazing knocks at the top to lay the foundation. Nitish Kumar Reddy also chipped in with a dazzling cameo, finishing unbeaten on 29 off 13 balls.

During the chase, PBKS got off to a disastrous start, losing three wickets for just 23 runs inside the powerplay. While Cooper Connolly slammed an unbeaten century (107* off 59), he didn’t get enough support from the other end as the visitors were restricted to 202/7.

Speaking after the game, SRH skipper Pat Cummins praised his team's aggressive batting and disciplined, proactive bowling in the second innings to defend the high score against a strong opponent.

"I think Punjab are a really good side, they were number one coming into this. I thought the batters to get up to what we did was sensational. I think that and then to close it out, no matter what the score is, bowling second against a side like that is always tough, but I thought we were quite clinical," Cummins, who earned the Player-of-the-Match award, said at the post-match presentation.

Cummins emphasized not playing conservatively, allowing batters like Abhishek and Head to set the pace.

"I think we're pretty good at playing at our own pace. Don't try and start off conservatively. It's not really Abhi or Travis's style. So it's just trying to max out as much as we can, not really thinking about a total or anything. And then maybe later on in the innings, if it takes a different direction, we're pretty good at adjusting," he added.

According to Cummins, Sunrisers have utilized their home ground effectively, adjusting well to pitches that "grip" later in the evening.

“We've played some really good cricket here over the last couple of years. I think it's suited our style. Even tonight, it kind of gripped a little bit, which kind of suits a lot of our bowlers towards the end. And we just feel like no matter which way this pitch takes us mid-game, we've seen it before, we can adjust,” he remarked.

Pat Cummins, who returned with the bowling figures of 2 for 34 in his four overs, also weighed in on his performance.

“Yeah, happy with how I bowled. I still don't know how I got that award, but I feel really good. Came into this fresh. Had pretty good prep. So, no, I'm feeling great. Happy I could contribute,” he stated.

Reflecting on PBKS opener Priyansh Arya’s wicket, Cummins said: “Not much has worked in the powerplay for any team really, so we tried to be a bit more proactive today. You know, we had our plans, but didn't have many other options, so I thought we'd try a bouncer and fortunately it came off tonight.”

Cummins also Connolly for his strong batting form this season, noting he has been a key performer, and added that it's a positive phase for Australian players overall.

"Yeah, happy (to see Connolly doing well). Yeah, good result. Good to see the Aussies doing well. He's been a star this season with the bat for them. Yeah, not bowling at the moment, but still showing his worth as a batter. So good time for Oz," he said.

Cummins expressed satisfaction with the result while noting the long season ahead. The Sunrisers have 14 points from 11 outings and need one more win from their remaining three league fixtures to confirm a place in the playoffs.

“I mean, I hope so (this could be the season for SRH). It's still a bit of time to go. So we've actually got a bit of a break now. So we'll savour being at the top for a little bit and, you know, still a little bit of time to go, but wouldn't want to be anywhere else than number one. So, happy,” he concluded.
