Sanju Samson has emerged as the cornerstone of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in IPL 2026. Following a high-profile trade move, the wicketkeeper-batter has silenced critics with stellar performances, amassing 402 runs in 10 matches at an average of 57.43 and strike rate of 167.50, including two centuries.
On Tuesday (May 5), Samson produced a dazzling knock of 87* in 52 balls to script CSK’s eight-wicket victory over Delhi Capitals (DC) at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.
After the game, former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan lauded Samson’s sensational form and match-winning capabilities, noting he brings a similar impact to the side as the legendary MS Dhoni once did.
"Sanju Samson's contribution in the Chennai dressing room has been great. We have seen MS Dhoni contribute in every manner, whether it was helping the captain or sharing his experience in the dressing room. Sanju is playing the same role," Pathan said on his YouTube channel.
With this victory, CSK remained alive in the playoffs race. On the other hand, DC sit seventh in the team standings with 8 points and must win all four remaining league matches to maintain a realistic chance of qualifying for the playoffs.
Pathan criticized DC’s decision to bat first against CSK, arguing that recent damp conditions made chasing a better option in Delhi.
"Batting first was the wrong decision. You were bowled out for 75 against RCB at this ground just a few days back. Weather played its part in that match as well. There was rain during the day ahead of this match. You had already won the toss, you could have bowled first and gotten the help that the CSK bowlers got," he remarked.
