Mumbai Indians (MI) ended their losing streak on May 4, as they defeated Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) at their home in Wankhede Stadium. Mumbai Indians stand-in captain Suryakumar Yadav won the toss and chose to bowl first.
Mitchell Marsh made 44, and Nicholas Pooran finally found his form, hitting 8 sixes in his 21-ball 63 runs. LSG tripped a bit in the middle overs, but Aiden Markram’s 31* and Himmat Singh’s 40* gave them a strong finish as they finished on 228/5 in 20 overs.
Corbin Bosch picked 2/20, but the focus was on Jasprit Bumrah, who went for 45 runs in 4 overs.
In response, Ryan Rickelton (83) and Rohit Sharma (84) added 143 runs for the first wicket. MI did lose a couple of wickets in quick time, but Naman Dhir (23*) ensured that MI chased down the total with 6 wickets in hand.
The win gave the five-time champions a significant lift and kept their chances of making the playoffs alive after they had lost seven of their opening nine games. All this had happened under captaincy of Hardik Pandya.
Suryakumar Yadav led the Mumbai Indians to a convincing victory in the absence of Hardik Pandya, who missed the game due to a back spasm.
Malti, the sister of MI bowler Deepak Chahar, congratulated the squad on X after the game. She commended her brother for finishing his allotted number of overs and appreciated Suryakumar's leadership.
“THIS felt like MI again! Almost everyone performed. Well played, Ryan and Rohit bhaiya! Nice captaincy by Surya. And Deepak delivering all four overs-well bowled, bro! Proper team game. This is MI!" Malti wrote on X.
Deepak Chahar finished with 0/43 in 4 overs, but his brilliant bowling in the death overs helped MI restrict LSG to 228 runs.
"To be very frank, we've been in this situation a lot of times this season. It was nothing new, to be very honest. But then I knew, T20 cricket after the powerplay from 7 to 10, that's the best time when you can pull the game off. We knew two wickets here and there, and I can take control of the game. And the way all the bowlers responded, I think they showed a lot of character. (on getting back into the game) I think about 8-9 overs, they were 110 or 120 for 1 or 2. I don't really remember. But then from there, pulling it to 162 for 5 in 16 overs, I think the performance was unbelievable," said MI stand-in skipper Surya after the match.
