Pat Cummins, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), took the heat after Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) ended their winning run in the ongoing IPL 2026 tournament. They clashed at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in Hyderabad on May 3, 2026.
Pat Cummins won the toss and chose to bat first. Abhishek Sharma fell for 15 runs, but Travis Head (61) and Ishan Kishan (61) scored runs for the second wicket. Kishan scored 42 runs. However, the rest of the batting failed, as SRH only managed 165 runs in 20 overs.
In response, Finn Allen took on Pat Cummins and hit him for 27 runs in the 4th over before falling to him in the same over. That over gave KKR enough momentum that Ajinkya Rahane (43), Angkrish Raghuvanshi (53), and Rinku Singh (22*) ensured that KKR won the game by 7 wickets.
Cummins stated that while SRH began strongly, they lost momentum in the second half of the innings. They had aimed for about 200 runs but ended up with fewer as the pitch slowed, which KKR took advantage of.
“Well, not our best day. We got off to a pretty good start. And then after that, we weren't at our sharpest. Probably from where we were, we should have found a way to get higher, you know, up around 200 or past 180. But not to be,” Cummins said to the broadcaster after the match.
“I think you just have to adapt. I actually thought 180 was where it started. I thought the way we chose our matchups was really well. And probably the second half didn't quite choose the moments, myself included. (On the par score) I think 180, something like that. It did dry up a little bit and slow down. But again, from where we were, I think we should have gotten 180 plus,” Cummins stated.
He also conceded that his pricey 27-run over was costly, as they eventually lost owing to narrow margins.
“Much of the same; the margins are quite small here. We still showed a lot of good things. With the bowling unit, we dragged it right to the end. My overspending of 27 probably made a difference. So there are only a few moments that can make a big difference,” he added.
SRH will next face the Punjab Kings at home in Hyderabad on May 6.
