Mumbai Indians (MI) batter Tilak Varma overcame a tough start to go berserk in the final stages and slam his maiden IPL century against Gujarat Titans (GT) at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad on Monday (April 20).
Asked to bat first, MI were struggling at 44/3 before Tilak and Naman Dhir added 52 runs to steady the ship. After Naman’s dismissal on 45, the southpaw stitched an 81-run partnership with skipper Hardik Pandya, who contributed only 15.
Since Tilak was anchoring the innings after a difficult start, he was on 19 off 22 balls at one point. However, the stylish left-hander put a pedal on the accelerator in the last five overs, hitting boundaries at will to put MI in the driver’s seat.
Tilak was particularly severe on Prasidh Krishna and Ashok Sharma in the death overs. He smashed 82 runs in his next 23 balls to finish with 101 not out, including 8 fours and 7 sixes.
Tilak Varma notched up the three-figure mark by hitting Krishna for a boundary in the final delivery of the innings. His carnage propelled MI to a formidable 199/5 in 20 overs.
Cricket fraternity showered rich praise on Tilak Varma’s stunning hundred after a disappointing start to the season.
