Punjab Kings (PBKS) head coach Ricky Ponting was visibly angry with Shashank Singh’s fielding lapses during their 54-run victory over Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in Mullanpur on Sunday (April 19).
Shashank had a challenging day on the field, dropping three catches that left Ponting furious in the dugout. During the 14th over of LSG’s chase, he spilled a high chance from Nicholas Pooran off Yuzvendra Chahal's bowling, misjudging the ball and only getting a slight touch.
It was followed by a brainfade moment in the 18th over, where Shashank misjudged a shot from Aiden Markram. He stopped running, thinking it would go for a six, but the ball landed right in front of him on the boundary rope. This specifically prompted Ponting to stand up and vent his frustration.
Shashank dropped a third chance in the penultimate over, failing to hold onto a catch from Mukul Choudhary at deep square-leg.
While captain Shreyas Iyer reacted with a smile and jokingly asked Shashank Singh to hide his face with his cap, Ponting's initial reaction was far more serious. However, once the win was sealed, the coach set aside his anger and was seen hugging Shashank, a gesture widely praised as excellent man-management.
Despite his fielding struggles, Shashank contributed to Punjab Kings' record-breaking total of 254/7 with a quickfire 17 off 6 balls. With the ball, PBKS restricted the Super Giants to 200/5, marking their fifth win in six matches this season.
