Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) batter Heinrich Klaasen has stated that MS Dhoni’s absence as a player in IPL 2026 "doesn’t really make much of a difference" to the strength of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK).
Having lost the first three matches, CSK are currently languishing at the bottom of points table and need to immediately address several issues to revive their campaign.
Despite the underwhelming start to the season, Klaasen downplayed the impact of Dhoni’s absence. He argued that veteran wicketkeeper’s recent role as a lower-order batter, facing only 5-10 balls, means his absence doesn't significantly weaken the team.
“CSK has got an incredible IPL record. Even with Dhoni not being there, they are not much of a lesser side. They are a very strong side. It’s not going to be an easy game,” Klaasen told the JioStar Press Room.
The former South African cricketer noted that the impact of Dhoni's absence is more felt in leadership than as a batter.
“Dhoni not being there doesn’t really make much of a difference. It is more about other guys. I don’t think his absence will make such a big impact except for his leadership,” he said.
“He has been coming to bat for just 5-10 balls in the last few years,” Klaasen added.
SRH are targeting a quick turnaround in IPL 2026 after starting with one win against KKR and two losses to RCB and LSG, currently sitting fifth.
Despite early struggles and missing regular skipper Pat Cummins, Klaasen remains optimistic. “It’s still early days in the tournament. We are confident we will fire in all departments going forward,” he stated.
Looking ahead to their April 18 clash against CSK, Klaasen emphasized the need to apply pressure on a potent batting lineup.
“Shivam (Dube) is in good form, their openers are fantastic — we just need to squeeze them a bit more,” he said.
Klaasen also expressed confidence in his skill set against spin. “I’ve played a lot against spinners. They are coming for me and I am going after them,” he said.
