The BCCI has broken silence amid the growing political row surrounding KKR’s signing of Bangladesh pacer Mustafizur Rahman, asking the franchise to let go of the left-armer from its squad ahead of the IPL 2026 season.
Speaking to news agency PTI, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia confirmed the development, citing that the board had communicated its decision to KKR in light of the prevailing situation.
KKR’s decision to rope in Mustafizur for INR 9.2 crore has sparked sharp reactions from political parties, religious leaders, and public figures across India. The backlash is beyond the cricketing sphere, it’s about the current crisis in India–Bangladesh relations amidst atrocities against minorities in the neighbouring country.
Saikia addressed the situation, stating that KKR would be allowed to name a replacement player if needed.
“The BCCI has asked Kolkata Knight Riders to release Mustafizur Rahman from its squad. They can ask for a replacement if needed, and upon request, the BCCI will allow a replacement player,” Saikia told PTI on Saturday.
Explaining the reason behind the decision, the BCCI secretary said, “Because of recent developments all across.”
The pressure on the board had been mounting over Mustafizur’s participation, particularly in the wake of the recent killing of a Hindu man in Bangladesh and India’s expression of concern regarding the safety of minorities there.
What began as a cricketing decision turned into a wider debate, bringing the league, the franchise owner and the BCCI into a sensitive conversation.
