The two most talked-about IPL trade rumors, Washington Sundar to Chennai Super Kings and KL Rahul to Kolkata Knight Riders, have been ruled out. Cricbuzz can reveal that Sundar's return to Chennai has been definitively ruled out, while Rahul's probable move to Kolkata is exceedingly unlikely, if not dead.
The Washington Sundar to CSK rumor was first floated on a YouTube channel a few weeks back, and it was not entirely untrue at the time, as the Chennai Super Kings are reported to have considered having the India all-rounder on their roster, particularly when R Ashwin retired.
However, Gujarat Titans head coach Ashish Nehra has refused to entertain the idea of parting ways with the Tamil Nadu player.
Cricbuzz has reported that Nehra’s decision not to part ways with Sundar was conveyed to Chennai Super Kings long before his match-winning 49* for India in the third T20I against Australia. The Gujarat Titans management stated clearly that they had no intention of selling a player in whom they had made significant investments.
Sundar was bought by the Gujarat Titans for Rs 3.2 crore at the last mega auction in Jeddah, and his career has taken off since then. Sundar played only six IPL games last season, but he has since established himself as an all-format regular for India.
Coming to KL Rahul’s potential trade to KKR from Delhi Capitals, it was an open and shut case. The idea was only entertained when reports stated that Sanju Samson was being traded to DC from RR in lieu of Tristan Stubbs and possibly Sameer Rizvi.
KKR are on the lookout for an Indian keeper-batter who can open the innings and also be a captaincy candidate, and KL Rahul and Sanju Samson both fit their requirements perfectly. However, reports stated that the other teams that were in talks for the trade requested premium players like Varun Chakravarthy and/or Rinku Singh in return, and KKR was unwilling to do so.
RR may find themselves in a pickle over Samson, as the player has made it obvious to management that he wants to go on and concentrate focus elsewhere. DC, on the other hand, is not obligated to work with KL Rahul.
While Capitals management is receptive to the notion, they are only willing to entertain a deal if it involves a frontline player, which is not an option at this time.
The caveat here is that the players have little say in the matter, whether the franchises choose to trade or not to trade them.
