Ahead of the home T20I series against the West Indies, India opener Abhishek Sharma detailed his shift from statistical targets to match-winning impact. He credited team support, management, and his domestic team Punjab for helping cultivate a philosophy centered on winning trophies over personal milestones.

Sharma’s mindset fundamentally changed during Punjab's triumphant 2023-24 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy campaign. He was named Player of the Series, tracing his aggressive, unselfish approach back to this domestic breakthrough.

Earlier this year, the southpaw played a pivotal role in India’s T20 World Cup-winning run on home soil. After breaking an early tournament slump with a half-century against Zimbabwe, he slammed an explosive, 18-ball fifty in the final against New Zealand to secure the coveted ICC trophy.

Just days prior to the West Indies series, Abhishek starred in the men's cricket final at the 2026 Asian Games in Nagoya. He blasted a blistering 61 runs off 28 balls (including 7 sixes) against Pakistan to anchor India to a gold medal finish.

“When I started, I thought that I have to play in a way that I can play impactful innings for my team. That started with my Punjab team in domestic cricket, and we won the domestic T20 competition in 2024. From there, I feel, a mindset developed that I don't have to chase milestones, because that's not in your hands. What's in your hands is how much impact you can make,” Abhishek told JioStar.

“That is how I want to play, no matter what opposition we are playing. As an individual, I never had this urge that I should achieve this, achieve that. I had only one goal: I have to win trophies. I feel that you need a lot of support from the team, the management, the coaches and the captain because they know how you play. I feel they have helped me quite a lot, the entire team, not just the support staff but the players as well, especially the senior players,” he added.

Now established in the setup, Abhishek Sharma emphasized mentoring young incoming talents like Vaibhav Sooryavanshi to ensure they feel the same sense of belonging and freedom from day one.

“So now, just as it happened for me when I was new, the new players should also get that freedom. They should feel that they belong here. I really enjoy that when I talk with Vaibhav or other young players,” he remarked.

The first game of the five-T20I series between India and West Indies will be played in Lucknow on Tuesday (October 6).
