India opener Yashasvi Jaiswal was poised to score his third double hundred in Test cricket on Day 2 of the ongoing second match against the West Indies at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi.
However, it was not meant to be as Jaiswal was run-out for 175. The southpaw, who was unbeaten on 172 at stumps on Day 1, managed to add only two runs to his overnight tally as he was involved in a horrible mix-up with skipper Shubman Gill.
During the 92nd over of India’s first innings, Jaiswal played a drive towards mid-off and rushed for a quick single but Gill was guilty of ball watching, and in the end, the left-hander paid the price.
The throw from Tagenarine Chanderpaul came to the keeper's end and Tevin Imlach ran in to collect the ball before breaking the stumps, resulting in Jaiswal’s run-out.
Yashasvi Jaiswal was absolutely dejected by his dismissal. In fact, he had a heated argument with Gill before leaving the field.
After the close of play on Day 2, Jaiswal was asked about the heartbreaking end to his innings. The youngster played down the incident, saying such things can happen in sport.
“I always try to play as long as I can. If I'm there, I should just take the game forward and play as long as I can. It's (his run-out) part of the game, so it's fine. There is always a thought that what I can achieve and what can be my goal and my team's goal, I just try and be in the game and make sure if I'm in, I should take it long. I was trying to get in, so there was a bit of movement, but when I was in the middle, I was thinking that maybe I'll bat for one hour and then it will be easy for me to score. The wicket is still pretty good, we are bowling very well, we will be seeing as quickly as we can get to them and get them again,” said Jaiswal while speaking to the host broadcaster.
Coming to the match, Shubman Gill overcame the disappointment of Yashasvi Jaiswal's run-out to pile on the runs for India.
The hosts declared their first innings at 518/5, with Gill remaining unbeaten on 129 runs for his highest Test score at home. His 196-ball knock was studded with 16 fours and 2 sixes. All-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy also contributed 49 runs while Dhruv Jurel scored 44 runs on the second day.
At stumps, West Indies reached the score of 140/4, still trailing India by 378 runs. Ravindra Jadeja was the pick of the Indian bowlers, claiming three wickets by conceding 37 runs in his 14 overs.
