The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) shared an update on Shubman Gill’s neck injury sustained during the first Test against South Africa in Kolkata.
The Indian captain, who was retired hurt on 4 after playing a sweep shot, was initially suspected to have picked up a mild sprain, but it turned out to be a bit more serious and required specialist intervention at the Woodlands Hospital.
While Gill’s participation in the second Test remains uncertain, he will travel to Guwahati for the series finale, slated to begin on November 22.
“Team India captain Shubman Gill suffered a neck injury on Day 2 of the Kolkata Test against South Africa and was taken to the hospital for examination after the end of day's play,” BCCI said in a statement.
“He was kept under observation and discharged the next day. Shubman has been responding well to the medical treatment provided and will travel to Guwahati with the team on 19th November, 2025.
“He will continue to be monitored by the BCCI medical team and a decision on his participation in the 2nd Test will be taken accordingly,” the statement added.
Having lost the Kolkata Test, Team India have conceded 1-0 lead to Proteas in the two-match series. The hosts are facing a must-win situation in Guwahati Test to avoid series loss at home.
