India pacer Jasprit Bumrah and South Africa captain Temba Bavuma were seen in conversation after the visitors defeated the hosts by 30 runs in the opening Test at Kolkata's Eden Gardens.
In South Africa's second innings, Bavuma scored an unbeaten 55, and Corbin Bosch added 25 to help the visitors reach 153. India needed 124 to open the series on a winning note. However, Shubman Gill's home team collapsed in the chase, being bowled for just 93 in the last innings.
South Africa won by a thrilling 30 runs thanks to two wickets from left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj. Aiden Markram made a low catch after Mohammed Siraj edged a spinning delivery to slip, bringing in the final wicket.
Bumrah was seen putting his arm on Bavuma’s shoulder as they walked off the field, and seemingly, the pacer was apologizing for calling the Proteas batter ‘Bauna.’
The incident had happened in South Africa’s first innings’ 13th over; Jasprit Bumrah struck Temba Bavuma on the pads, and though the on-field umpire gave him not out, the India pacer discussed with Rishabh Pant about taking a DRS review.
Both were heard on the stump mic calling Bavuma “Bauna,” or someone of short height, before deciding against taking the DRS.
Meanwhile, as India’s last wicket fell, with Shubman Gill out due to injury, South Africa celebrated their first win in India after 2010, and Temba Bavuma carried on his brilliant record as captain.
He was walking off the field and was joined by India pacer Bumrah, and the two were seen having a conversation. The Proteas captain was more than willing to hear what the Indian speedster had to say, and the proceedings concluded with a handshake between the two.
