India ended day two of the ongoing first Test against South Africa in Kolkata as the visitors ended on 93/7 with a lead of 63 runs over the hosts.
India resumed on day two at 37/1 and, thanks to Washington Sundar (29), KL Rahul (39), Rishabh Pant, and Ravindra Jadeja (27 each), posted 189 runs. South Africa's Simon Harmer (4/30) and Marco Jansen (3/35) took full advantage of the uneven bounce and sharp turn provided by the Eden Gardens’ pitch.
In response, Ravindra Jadeja’s four wickets and Kuldeep Yadav’s two wickets left South Africa with just 63 runs ahead, with Temba Bavuma on 29*.
Shubman Gill had suffered a sprain in his neck and didn’t come out to bat or lead the Indian side in the South African second innings. Rishabh Pant, being the vice-captain, took over the captaincy duties and slipped seamlessly into the role, directing the bowlers through a tense afternoon as India gained control.
Late in the last session, a very memorable moment occurred when Pant's call behind the stumps immediately led to a wicket. Pant advised Kuldeep Yadav to change his angle as Marco Jansen attempted a counterattack.
“KD (Kuldeep), 2 ball idhr se dalde, please (just 2 balls from this side, please),” Pant was heard saying on the stump mic.
Kuldeep Yadav came around the wicket on the very next delivery. Marco Jansen tried to slog sweep him, but managed an outside edge, and the ball went to KL Rahul’s left after a deflection from Pant’s leg. He took a sharp catch, and the dangerous Jansen had to walk back.
