The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has named the replacement for injured Washington Sundar for the remainder of the two ODIs of the three-match series between India and New Zealand. India won the first ODI in Baroda on January 11 by four wickets in a wonderful match against New Zealand.
Despite half-centuries by Devon Conway, Henry Nicholls, and Daryl Mitchell, New Zealand managed 300/8. Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, and Harshit Rana took two wickets each. In response, Shubman Gill made 56 and Shreyas Iyer made 49, while Virat Kohli starred with 93 runs as India won by four wickets.
However, during the match, Washington Sundar, who bowled five overs and gave up 27 runs and made 7 not out, suffered a rib injury and was ruled out of the remainder of the series.
“India all-rounder Washington Sundar reported an acute onset of discomfort in his left lower rib area while bowling during the first ODI against New Zealand at the BCA Stadium, Vadodara, on Sunday. He will undergo further scans, following which the BCCI Medical Team will seek expert opinion. Washington has been ruled out of the remaining two matches of the IDFC First Bank ODI series,” the BCCI official statement read.
The BCCI selection committee has named Delhi’s Ayush Badoni as Washington Sundar’s replacement for the remainder of the two ODIs, to be played in Rajkot and Indore.
“The Men’s Selection Committee has named Ayush Badoni as his replacement. Badoni will link up with the squad in Rajkot, the venue for the second ODI,” the statement read.
Ayush Badoni has captained Delhi in domestic cricket and has made 1681 runs in 21 FC matches, hitting four centuries and seven fifties. He has 693 runs in 27 List-A games, with one century, and has 18 wickets as well. He also has 1877 runs and has 17 wickets in 96 T20 matches.
Ayush Badoni has also done well in the IPL, playing for Lucknow Super Giants (LSG).
