India’s spin all-rounder Washington Sundar has been ruled out of the remainder of the three-ODI series against New Zealand after suffering a strain during the opening match in Vadodara on Sunday (January 11), TOI reported.
According to the report, it is doubtful if Sundar will be able to return to action for the five-match T20I series against the Kiwis, starting January 21 in Nagpur.
"Yes, Sundar has been ruled out of the remaining two ODIs against New Zealand (at Rajkot on Jan 24 and at Indore on Jan 28) due to the side strain he picked up during the first ODI at Vadodara on Sunday night," TOI quoted a BCCI source as saying.
Earlier, India wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant was also ruled out of the New Zealand ODI series due to a side strain. The BCCI Men’s Selection Committee has named Dhruv Jurel as Pant’s replacement.
However, Sundar’s injury is a bit more concerning for the Indian team since he is part of the T20 World Cup 2026 squad and the global showpiece is now less than a month away.
In the post-match presser, Harshit Rana shared an update on Sundar's injury, saying: “Washington has a side strain. He was in pain while batting. Our medical team will assess and will update.”
Washington Sundar managed to bowl just five overs during New Zealand's innings, returning with the figures of 0 for 27. The left-hander, who later came out to bat at No. 8, was visibly struggling to run between the wickets but chipped in with a valuable run-a-ball 7 not out, adding 27* in 16 balls with KL Rahul for the seventh wicket to take India over the line with four wickets and an over to spare.
