Former India coach Sanjay Bangar became embroiled in a scandal after his comments on language during live commentary provoked outrage on social media. The event occurred during India's first ODI against New Zealand in Vadodara on Sunday.
While on commentary, Bangar stated that Hindi is India's native language while speaking to former India fast bowler Varun Aaron. His words received immediate notice and outrage from viewers.
In the 12th over of New Zealand's batting, commentators Aaron and Bangar had a brief debate about Hindi and Tamil. Wicketkeeper KL Rahul instructed spinner Sundar to bowl slightly slower after seeing he was bowling like a medium pacer.
Speaking in Hindi, Bangar said, “Medium pacer jaise daal rahe ho yar, spinner ho, thoda ball ko dheema fekho.”
Speaking about the situation, Aaron stated that Rahul could have communicated with Sundar in Tamil, just as he had done earlier in the fight. When he questioned Bangar about his opinions, the latter cleverly replied that he supports the national language.
“Mai rashtra bhasha me believe karta hun (I believe in national language – Hindi),” indirectly saying that language doesn’t matter,” Bangar said.

Many viewers thought the comment was inappropriate and offensive, considering India does not have an officially proclaimed national language. Soon after the video went viral, social media users chastised Bangar for his remarks.
