India had a decent day one of the second Test against New Zealand that began on October 24, 2024, at the MCA Stadium in Pune. New Zealand leads the three-Test series 1-0 and Tom Latham won the toss and chose to bat first.
India made three changes to their playing XI. Kuldeep Yadav, KL Rahul, and Mohammed Siraj were dropped and, in their places, Washington Sundar, Shubman Gill, and Akash Deep were selected.
R Ashwin provided the first three breakthroughs to India, including that of a well-set Devon Conway for 78 runs. At one point in time, Conway and Rachin Ravindra (65) looked like taking New Zealand to a big total on day one.
But then Washington Sundar ran through the remainder of New Zealand batters with ease. Mitchell Santner managed to make 33 runs as New Zealand folded for 259 runs. Sundar finished with his maiden fifer and best Test bowling figures of 7/59.
Indian batting suffered a jolt as Rohit Sharma was clean bowled by Tim Southee for a duck, and the hosts ended day one on 16/1.
Kohli was padded up following Rohit Sharma's departure, but he did not come out to bat after Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill completed the remaining overs. He decided to have some batting practice after the play ended and spent time near the boundary, hitting a few deliveries.
