Varun Chakaravarthy became Indian cricket's oldest ODI debutant since 1974 when he was given his ODI cap ahead of the series' second match against England in Cuttack on Sunday.

At 33 years and 164 days, mystery-spinner Chakravarthy is now second on the list of India's oldest ODI debutants, trailing only former wicket-keeper Farokh Engineer, who played in the format's inaugural encounter in 1974.

Varun Chakaravarthy received his ODI debut cap from Ravindra Jadeja in an emotional moment for the spinner from Tamil Nadu.

"Varun, cap No. 259. It's a special day for you and your family. From tennis-ball cricket to T20 cricket, we all have seen your magic. Now it's time to do something really special in this format, and we all are with you. Just give your hundred percent. Good luck," Jadeja told Varun in a video shared by BCCI.

Chakravarthy also shared his thoughts on his momentous day.

"It feels really good because it's been a long journey from my T20 debut, and (I have) got his breakthrough now. It's come after playing a lot of domestic cricket, Vijay Hazare (Trophy). I will definitely cherish it and value it," said the debutant.

Varun has already played 18 T20Is for India and has been on a roll since his comeback into the format after a hiatus of 4 years.

On Sunday, India made two changes to their team composition as England won the toss and opted to bat. Virat Kohli came back into the side after missing the first ODI because of a knee niggle, taking Yashasvi Jaiswal's spot, while debutant Chakravarthy stepped in for Kuldeep Yadav.
