IND v ENG 2024: Michael Vaughan slammed for calling Ranchi Test pitch a ‘shocker’; changes tone after England recover

England ended day one on 302/7 with Joe Root unbeaten on 106.

Joe Root remains on 106* after day one | GettyFormer England captain Michael Vaughan was trolled on social media for his review of the pitch for the ongoing fourth Test between India and England being played in Ranchi. This match started on February 23, 2024.

England captain Ben Stokes won the toss and chose to bat first. However, India debutant pacer Akash Deep took three quick wickets in the first session of play, getting rid of Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope for a duck and Zak Crawley for 42 runs.

Then Ashwin removed Jonny Bairstow for 38 runs and then Jadeja accounted for Ben Stokes for 3 runs as England went to lunch at 112/5.

This led to Michael Vaughan taking to X and sharing his views of the pitch in Ranchi. While he said that the surface shouldn’t be judged until both teams have played on it, he called the pitch a shocker.

The old saying .. Do not judge a pitch till both teams have batted and bowled on it .. but let’s be honest .. this one looks a shocker,” Vaughan posted.

However, after lunch, thanks to Joe Root and Ben Foakes England came back in the game with their partnership of 113 runs.

This led to Vaughan dramatically changing his tone and posted: “The pitch is clearly no longer a shocker.”

Joe Root made a sublime century, while Foakes was dismissed by Mohammed Siraj for 47 runs. England ended day one on 302/7 with Root on 106* and Ollie Robinson on 31*.

However, Michael Vaughan had done enough to warrant lots of trolling from cricket fans on social media platform X.
